How Energy and Heat Recovery Ventilators Work

The basics of the heat recovery ventilator (HRV) and energy recovery ventilator (ERV) are simple. They take air from inside a home that has already been heated or cooled and then use it to condition air brought in from the outside. In this way, an ERV or ERV system recovers the energy used to originally heat and cool the inside air and applies to the fresh outdoor air.

Think of a hot summer day. You’re running the AC to cool down your inside air, and you have the doors and windows closed to keep out the heat. Your ERV system draws a current of fresh outdoor air through a vent, while also drawing in cool air from the rooms. The two air currents pass through a heat exchanger, where the warm outdoor air loses heat to the cooler indoor air. This pre–cools the fresh outdoor air before it reaches your rooms, while the stale indoor air is vented outside.

ERV and HRV Systems Benefit You All Year

During winter, the process above reverses: cold outdoor air picks up heat from the warm indoor air. Around 80% of the energy used in the HVAC system is recovered to use on the fresh air. You’ll not only receive fresh air while exhausting stale air, but you’ll save money as well—all without having to open up windows and doors to unpleasant outdoor conditions.

There are small differences between energy and heat recovery ventilators. An ERV transfers moisture between air currents along with heat, and this allows for humidity control, while an HRV works better for colder temperatures. Let your HVAC professional find which one will work for your home.

Case Study

The Turners wanted to improve ventilation without compromising their home’s energy efficiency. They kept opening windows for fresh air, but all of their heat or air conditioning would escape. AirSouth Cooling and Heating installed a heat recovery ventilator (HRV) which gave them access to fresh air that was free of contaminants without a spike in their energy bills.

Results

  • Clean, fresh air: The Turners could enjoy fresh, clean outdoor air in their home that was free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), cooking smoke, and other contaminants.
  • Energy efficiency: There was no noticeable increase in heating or air conditioning costs.
